How to Make a Homemade Dildo?

Before we get into what you can do, let’s be crystal clear: most household items are not safe for insertion. Porous materials like sponges, fruits, vegetables, or wood can harbor bacteria and irritate delicate tissue. Breakable items such as glass not designed for impact, or anything sharp-edged or textured, can splinter or cause microtears.

Objects handled with paint, varnish, or unknown coatings, as well as plastics with unknown chemicals, are equally unsafe. And certain everyday items—cucumbers, carrots, zucchini, plastic bottles, hairbrush handles, remote controls, or metal tools—are especially dangerous. They can crack, absorb fluids, or introduce bacteria, all of which can lead to infection or allergic reactions.

DIY toys should always be non-porous, smooth, body-safe, and easy to clean, so it’s crucial to stick to materials and methods that meet that standard.

Approach #1: Mold-and-Cast Silicone (The Only Real DIY Method)

If you’re serious about making a homemade dildo, platinum-cure silicone is the gold standard. It’s the same material used in commercial toys when done correctly.

You’ll Need:
  • A body-safe silicone mix (platinum-cure, not hardware silicone)
  • A mold container (plastic cup, silicone mold, etc.)
  • A smooth object to use as the shape (non-porous + sanitized)
  • Mixing cups and stirrers
  • Gloves
  • Optional: colorant made for silicone, a suction base, or a handle core
How It Works:
Create the mold
  • Place your object (the shape you want) into a container.
  • Make sure it is stable and doesn’t touch the sides.
Mix the silicone
  • Follow instructions exactly — platinum silicone has strict ratios.
  • Mix slowly to avoid air bubbles.
Pour carefully
  • Pour silicone around the object.
  • Tap the container to release bubbles.
Let it cure
  • Curing times vary from 4–24 hours.
  • Do NOT remove it early — unfinished silicone is unsafe.
Remove the mold + clean
  • Take the toy out, wash with warm water and mild soap.
  • Inspect for gaps, air pockets, or rough edges.
Pros:
  • Fully customizable
  • Body-safe material
  • Smooth, durable, non-porous
Cons:
  • Requires supplies
  • Takes time
  • Must be made correctly for safety

This is the only DIY method truly comparable to a store-bought dildo.

Approach #2: Using Body-Safe Objects You Already Own

If you don’t want to work with silicone, you can repurpose certain objects safely but they must meet strict criteria.

Acceptable items include:
  • Stainless steel wands
  • Glass massage wands (borosilicate only)
  • Smooth, sealed silicone items
  • Some personal massagers (if waterproof + non-porous + no seams)
Safety rules:
  • They must be one solid piece, no attachments or removable caps
  • No electronics inserted internally
  • No seams, ridges, or cracks
  • The object must be non-porous and easy to sanitize
  • Use lube every time

“If this fell into a sink of boiling water, would it survive?” If the answer is no, it’s not safe for insertion.

Approach #3: Skip DIY and Hack the Experience

If you’re curious about experimenting without committing to a purchase, try non-insertive sensations:

  • Massage wands
  • Vibrating bullets
  • Cushioned pillow grinding
  • Hot/cold temperature toys
  • Silicone-safe vibrators applied externally

This lets you explore sensation safely while you figure out what shapes or intensities you like.

No matter what you choose, ALWAYS keep these rules:

✔ Use non-porous materials

✔ Avoid anything handmade from wood, clay, or 3D printers

✔ Never use food or household objects

✔ Wash before and after use

✔ Use lube (water-based or silicone depending on material)

✔ Stop immediately if it hurts

✔ When in doubt? Don’t use it internally

There are ways to experiment at home but most DIY hacks circulating online are unsafe, unsanitary, or downright dangerous.

If curiosity is what brought you here, that’s great. If safety is what keeps you cautious, that’s even better. Your body deserves tools designed with care, cleanliness, and intention. DIY can be fun, but when it comes to sexual wellness, safety always comes first.
